Foot Trimming

The recent foot trimming courses with both Terry Burden and Steve Paul, were a big success for all that attended. Thanks again to Will and Mandy Sanders, and to Geoff Bickham for supplying the locations and to all of those that attended for making them such a success.

How to be a better Herdsperson

Are you a young farmer or farm worker with a growing interest in dairy cattle? Then this may be for you…

This course has been designed specifically for those young farmers and farm workers who are keen to improve their ability to assist in the health management of a modern dairy herd. As a predominantly “hands on” course, it sets out to improve understanding of the cow and her environment, show best practice, common pitfalls and aims to install a great number of skills that can be used by anyone on a daily basis, to help improve cow health, performance and profitability.

To enable this, the course will be run at Colliton Barton, a newly created training facility based on a large dairy farm. This will allow regular interaction with live animals and practicing of the techniques taught. The course consists of six modules, each running between 11 and 3 on a Thursday and there will be two each month. This timing means that everyone should have finished morning milking and be back in time for the afternoon one!

The modules are as follows:

March 22nd 2012 : Calving, the new born calf and the fresh cow
March 29th 2012 : Calf and Young stock management
April 5th 2012 : Improving fertility
April 19th 2012 : Milking and mastitis
May 3rd 2012 : Nutrition
May 10h 2012 : Lameness

This very hands on course will only cost you £100 for the 6 days training. Places are limited and will be served on a first come first serve basis. This special low price has been made possible by funding from the Duchy skills project and the Laura Persey trust.

This training event is supported by the Duchy College Rural Business School through the SW Skills Programme, a Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) initiative.

Farm Walks

Thank you to both John and Ian Cottrell for allowing us to take several clients around their new parlour and sand filled cubicle sheds.
